History/Provenance

The obelisk was erected on the site of the first monument, built by the Jewish survivors in 1948 and pulled down by the Soviet authorities between 1949 and 1952. Apparently, the base of the original monument was reused for the obelisk.

Researchers provide different dates of the monument's erection: the early 1970s (Agranovskii and Guzenberg 2016, 719), 1964 (Guzenberg 2013, 47), and the early 1960s (Guzenberg 2021, 737) have all been proposed.

This obelisk is the oldest monument in the memorial complex. It is visited each year on May 8 to commemorate the end of World War II, as well as on August 2, on the day of the commemoration of the Roma genocide.
