Who is Commemorated

The 1641 listed Holocaust Victims

Description

This memorial is one of a pair of monuments (the other being here https://cja.huji.ac.il/browser.php?mode=set&id=44079) commemorating the Jewish victims of the Holocaust from Göteborg. It is a collection of five stelae made of blue-grey polished granite. Each stele contains a list of victims and includes their names, familial relations, birthday and location, and death day and location. In the background of each of the stele is the words of the Kaddish prayer, a prayer mourners say for the dead. 1641 victims are listed on the five stelae.

Nearby is a metal plaque with the name of the memorial, the date of its dedication, and a short text about the Holocaust.

Translation: Glorified and sanctified be God’s great name throughout the world which He has created according to His will. May He establish His kingdom in your lifetime and during your days, and within the life of the entire House of Israel, speedily and soon; and say, Amen. May His great name be blessed forever and to all eternity. Blessed and praised, glorified and exalted, extolled and honored, adored and lauded be the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, beyond all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations that are ever spoken in the world; and say, Amen. May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life, for us and for all Israel; and say, Amen. He who creates peace in His celestial heights, may He create peace for us and for all Israel; and say, Amen.

History/Provenance

The Jewish Community of Göteborg began plans for the creation of a Holocaust Memorial in the 1980s, intending to create a memorial listing the names of all the relatives of community members murdered in the Holocaust, but due to funding issues, the project was put on hold until the late 1990s. The Community partnered with  Göran Johansson, then chairman of the municipal executive committee of the City of Göteborg to secure funding, on the condition that the monument be publicly available.

Due to concerns of vandalism to the list of victims' names, and the trauma that could cause to their relatives, the monument was split into two parts; one at Bastionplasten and the other at the synagogue.

This memorial was unveiled on September 27th, 2009.
