MOIJA Coat of Arms Esther Scroll, Italy, late 18th century

© Umberto Nahon Museum of Italian Jewish Art (MOIJA), Photographer: N/A, 2021

The only decoration in the scroll is painted on its opening section. This is a coat of arms composed of two rampant lions flanking a palm tree. Due to the Jewish family emblems were informal, it happens that the same or very similar emblems were used by different families. In this case, it can be related to the Tedeschi family but a similar emblem was also used by the Foa family. The coat of arms is placed within a cartouche topped with a helmet and decorated with ribbons.

The scroll is mounted on a carved wooden roller.

Summary and Remarks

Other Esther scrolls or benedictions sheets decorated with the various coats of arms are listed among the "Related objects".
