Hebrew Illuminated Manuscripts
  MOIJA Esther Scroll with Red Frames, Italy, second half of the 18th century

The right edge is trimmed into a conical shape that is framed with a red line and three flowers (?) are painted on it. Two strings are attached to the tip of it. The Hebrew text of the Book of Esther is written within double panels framed with red lines.

The scroll is accompanied by a separate benedictions sheet decorated solely with a red frame, the same as in the scroll.

The scroll is mounted on a carved wooden handle.

The Book of Esther in Hebrew with initial and final benedictions and the final section of "Shoszanat Yaakov" poem followed by opening words of "Korei Megillah" poem.

Codicology

The scroll is formed of 4 membranes, containing in total 15 columns of 25 (?) lines each except for the column containing the section with the names of Haman's sons which includes 11 lines divided into two half-columns.

The text is written in Hebrew square Italian script in black ink on the flesh side of the parchment membranes.

The letter ח (Es. 1:6) is written as composed of two parts joined with a roof and is slightly larger than other letters in the scroll.

The membranes in the scroll are stitched together.
