Sacred and Ritual Objects  Holy Land Views - Kotel, Jerusalem, circa 1900

The following description was prepared by William Gross:     

As was true for many places in the world at the end of the 19th century, one of the crafts practiced by the women of Eretz Israel was the embroidery of scenes on punched paper backing.  One of the most popular subjects was the image of the western wall, or "Kotel", of which this is a fine example. Also embroidered on this creation, in Hebrew letters, are the names of the depicted sites of other holy places. Other scenes found rendered in this punched paper embroidery technique are biblical subjects, most often the sacrifice of Isaac. While this work is not dated in the inscription, similar works are found with dates between 1895 and 1910.
