Sacred and Ritual Objects Torah mantle, France, 1886/7
The following description was prepared by William Gross:
This Torah cover was a special covering made from light colored silk fabric for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. It depicts the shofar, representing the two holidays, and two horns of plenty on the two sides of the dedicatory inscription. Descending from the two horns are inscribed blessings that are wishes for the New Year in different areas of life. This textile was donated to the synagogue by Moshe Heimann and his wife Miriam. Combination of different techniques of embroidery and applique on silk rapp with silver thread galoon on two long sides. Inscription, the shofar and some floral motifs in silver thread raised laid stitch on carton foundation. Bourdeau silk thread in stem stitch to give shadow effect to letters and to floral motifs. The undulating ribbon has silk applique of two kinds in silk rapp and silk satin outlined with silver and gold cord. The grapes of of hollow silver semispheres. Horns of plenty are applique in relief embroidery with different sequins and short silver metal braids. The crown is applique in silk rapp and silver thread laid stitch. Fine linen lining.
