Ostjuden Synagogue at Swammerdamstraat in Amsterdam, The Netherlands

© Willy Lindwer, Photographer: Lindwer, Willy, 2002

The building, formerly used as a store (design of the original façade, ca. 1886), was repurposed for the Eastern-European Jewish community known as Kehillas Jaäkov. The synagogue was redeveloped and consecrated for the use of religious services in the year 1907 and could contain approximately 75 congregants. The building included a women’s gallery and, situated on the first floor, a classroom.

The Jewish community moved their services to the synagogue along the Gerrit van der Veenstraat in 1967. The building lost its religious function and was transformed into a private residence.
