Sacred and Ritual Objects Torah crown of the 'Torat Hesed' society in the synagogue by the cemetery in Lviv, Galicia, (1848)
The three tiered Torah crown consists of a main section, a middle section, a crest and an apex. Each tier is comprised of a base and arms.
The main section is comprised of a wide coronet-like base. It is decorated with six vertical bands, each bearing an identical pattern: Two confronting rampant lions supporting a medallion with a dedicatory inscription.
It is surmounted by a medallion with one of the zodiac signs which is topped by a vase with flowers.
The dedicatory inscription reads in a clockwise order in square letters: זה הכתר/שייך##לה'ח'ב'ק )להחברה הקדושה(/תורת חסד/ב"ב ## ה'כנ'ת )בבית הכנסת(/ על##בית## עלמין/בשנת##תר"ט## לפ"ק "This Crown belongs to the holy society 'Torat Hesed' in the synagogue of the cemetery in the year (5) 609 (=1849).
These vertical bands alternate with bands which depict two twisted columns that flank foliate scrolls. A coloured stone is set on top of each scroll. Six arms project from the bands with the scrolls. In the center of each arm is a medallion which bears one of the zodiac signs (13201), surrounded by C scrolls. A flower flanked by S scrolls decorates the lower and upper parts of the arms, which have bells hanging from rings inbetween them. The arms converge at the top under two wide rings on which the middle section is mounted. The lower ring is smooth, while the upper ring is decorated with flowers and leaves.
The base of the middle section is decorated with an alternating pattern of coloured stones and a diamond motif. It is surmounted by an alternating trefoil and a flower with a coloured stone in its center. Six arms decorated with leaves and flowers, project from the flowers of the base and converge undeer the base of the crest. A ring repeating the pattern of the base connects the arms in the center.
The base of the crest repeats the alternating pattern of the middle section. Six smooth arms project from it and converge at the top under a dome. A bell hangs in the center of the upper tiers.
The apex is an open winged eagle who stands on the dome with a chain in its beak.
