Summary and Remarks

The manuscript was executed by two scribes responsible for different texts: Scribe A copied Enyanei Lu'ah, whereas Meir ha-katan ben Yehiel Pikart copied Sefer Evronot. According to the watermarks and inscription on fol. 2 and fol. 38v (the last three lines) the manuscript was produced in Bohemia/Moravia in ca. 1611-12.

The manuscript includes simple scribes' decoration.

Watermarks:

Part I (Enyanei Lu'ah): Arrow within a shield (Piccard, Die Wasserzeichenkartei Piccard im Hauptstaatsarchiv Stuttgart, vol. IX: Werkzeuge und Waffen, 896 = Augsburg 1609/10).

Part II (Sefer Evronot): Double-headed eagle with a crown, shield and letters K, H and S (very close to: Labarre, Dictionary and Encyclopedia of Paper and Papermaking, Nr.90 A =Bohemia? 1618; Nr. 93 =Prague/Bohemia 1612; Nr. 95 = Eisgrub/Moravia 1614).

Ruling

Ruling is executed in ink for the frame only: 1+1 vertical lines and 1+1 horizontal lines. Tables are variously ruled.

Fol. 2 by Scribe A, on top of the page: והדמיון בגין עתה בשנת שע"ב לפ"ק עברו עלינו רפ"ב מחזורים ו[מחוק] שנים\ למחזור רפ"ג... "As is in the present year [5]372=1611/2 we passed 282 cycles and [erased] years of the cycle 283…" The second scribe Meir ben Yehiel Pikart ((מאיר בן יחיאל פיקרט mentioned his name in the text (tables?) few times, for example on fol. 7. On fol. 20v the scribe gives his full name: מאיר הקטן בן יחיאל פיקרט (Meir ha-katan (the Young) ben Yehiel Pikart, whereas on fols. 21r-v it is just Meir ha-katan. Fol. 38v, the last three lines inscribed: ועתה אנו עומדים/ שע"א לאלף הששי נמצא מחורבן בית שני עד עתה אלף שנים וחמש/ מאות וארבעים ושנים "And now we are in the year 371 of the 6th thousands [5]371 = 1610/1), which is 1542 years after the destruction of the second Temple (in 69 AD. i.e. 1542+69 = 1611)".

Decoration Program

All types of decoration were executed by the scribes themselves in one stage:

  1. Full page painted gate in brown ink enclosing the opening text of Part II (fol. 8).
  2. Initial word decorated with crisscross in black ink (fol. 1).
  3. Coloured calendar disc on paper, in green, yellow, ochre and magenta, glued to the leave of the manuscript for the calendar use (fol. 20).
  4. Framed tables in a form of a hand (fol. ???) and two entwined circles (fol. 16).

History/Provenance
• Fol. 51 ???, Owners' inscription: שקבלתי מ...עקיבא ... בק"ק ורנקבורט וגם ... שתקן ... זעקלן מק"ק מעץ ... Translation: "That I got from … Akiva… in the Holy Community of Frankfurt, as well as… taciturn? …Zeklin from the Holy Community of Metz." • Fol. 52: Inscription in a mixture of Yiddish and Hebrew mentioning different cities, mostly in Moravia, such as Breslau, Nikolsburg, Olmütz, Trebisch, etc. which may reflects an early presence of the manuscript in Bohemia-Moravia. • Fol. 49v there are some characters for the Hebrew years 264-605, i.e., the years 1504-1845 AD. • This manuscript was bound together with ÖNB Cod. hebr. 79. • Reached the collection of the Hofbibliothek not later than 1847.
