  New Wooden Synagogue in Gargždai, Lithuania

According to a Hebrew newspaper, Issachar Ber Klonsky built a new wooden synagogue in the place of the old one in 1861. Its interior was decorated with depictions of plants, flowers, and birds. See: Shlomo Meir Aharonzohn from Gorzd, “Taurogen,” Ha-Carmel, 36 (15.3.1861), p. 283.

עיר קטנה גורזד והיא יושבת בין הערים שאוועל וזאגער, עיר מושב לב"י [בני ישראל] מאז ,וברבות הימים ובית ה' לתפלה אשר להם היה שמה ומשמה נפרץ גדרו, ויהי למרמס כל עובר, ויער ה' את רוח הגביר המפורסם המשכיל הדורש טוב לישראל ולאדם, כמהור"ר [כבוד מורינו הרב רבי] יששכר בער קלאנסקי, ויבן בית הדש אל התפלה, והבית בהבנותו עץ ארז, ויספון את הקירות מחוץ בצלעות ארזים, ומפנימה מחוקה על הקיר ציצים ופרחים, וצפרים עפות מלאכה יפה להלל, ויתן על קרקע הבית מרצפת צלעות עץ מעשה ידי אמן לתפארת, ויעש את ארון הקדש הדור בלבוש כפורת ופרוכת משי אדום וירוק תאוה לעינים, ויערוך את השלחן אשר לפני ה' ובמעלות יעלו בו, כל המלאכה הדורה ונעימה, נותנת שמחה בלב הבאים לשפוך שם את שיחם, אלהים יגמול על הגביר הישר הזה והיתה צדקתו לנגד עיניו תמיד.
