Synagogue Gmilut Hasadim (GAH) in Suceava - Main Prayer hall - Wall decoration

© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Radovan, Zev, 2009

The eastern and western walls of the prayer hall and the ceiling are decorated by symbolic images as well as the depictions of holy places. The symbols of Tribes of Israel adorn the eastern and southern walls of the prayer hall. The images are placed in a broad band of decorative cornice and framed by rectangular frames.

Three paintings presenting the holy places in the Land of Israel are placed on the western wall of the prayer hall: Rachel's Tomb, the Western Wall of the Jerusalem Temple, the Machpelah Cave in Hebron. The photos of these scenes, made in 1996 and 2009 show significant changes in the pictures made during the renovation of 2003.
