Hebrew Illuminated Manuscripts Bologna Psalm Fragment, Germany, 13th c.
The initial word אשרי (blessed) which begins the text of Psalms is written in large square Ashkenazi display script in dark brown ink in the lower part of a rich micrographic panel, which occupies half the page. The panel is framed with a text border. The micrographic decoration forms two confronting rampant lions with elaborate foliate tails and a fleur-de-lys in between them. The lower margins of the page is decorated with masoretic micrography of a running fleur-de-lys interlace over arched half-palmettes while in the upper margins are 3 pairs of confronting birds in microgaphic masorah. The masorah magna, is also written vertically on either side of the right and left margins of the page creating a frame to the entire page.
