Jewish Funerary Art  Old Jewish Cemetery in Bârlad, Romania

The rectangular territory of the Old Jewish cemetery in Bârlad measures 200 x 150 m and has c. 200 surviving tombstones. The oldest one, so far discovered in the central part of Romania, dates back to 1729 and belongs to Hinda daughter of Naftali (see below). Two later tombstones from the 18th century are from 1759, belonging to the Holy man Naftali son of Eliyahu (see) and from 1769 of Arie Leib (see). The rest of the tombstones date to the late 19th century. The faces of the tombstones are executed in high relief and resemble decorative portals. In terms of style, they are similar to the tombstones in Bukovina.
