Sgan-Cohen, "Here This. I Pray You"

© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Laor, Liora, 05.1995

Part of the prophecy of the prophet Mica is painted on the canvas. The canvas is divided into two horizontal sections formed by rough lines. The upper, larger section encloses the text while the lower part remains empty. The text, Mica 3: 9-12 is written on a white background painted over another barely discernible layer of the same text. The verses of the painting read as follows: שמעו-נא זאת ראשי בית יעקב וקציני בית ישראל המתעבים משפט ואת כל הישרה יעקשו בנה ציון בדמים וירשלם בעולה ראשיה בשחד ישפטו ןכהניה במחיר יורו ונביאיה בכסף יקסמו ועל-יהוה ישענו לאמר הלוא יהוה בקרבנו לא-תבוא עלינו רעה לכן בגללכם ציון שדה תיחרש וירושלם עיין תהיה והר הבית לבמות יער "Hear this I pray you ye heads of the house of Jacob and princes of the house of Israel that abhor judgment and pervert all equity they build up Zion with blood and Jerusalem with inquity. The heads thereof judge for reward and the priests thereof teach for hire and the prophets thereof divine for money yet will they lean upon the Lord and say is not the Lord among us? No evil can come upon us. Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed as a field and Jerusalem shall become heaps and the mountain of the house." The unvocalized letters are written in black except for the second word in the fifth line which is written in red: בגללכם "For your sake" The Hebrew letter "Tzadi" (TZ) in the first and second lines is encircled.
