The Jews of Pušalotas

Description

A marble plaque is attached to the southern facade of the former synagogue, over the bricked up side door. The plaque has three almost identical inscriptions in Lithuanian, Yiddish, and English. 

Inscription

Lithuanian:

Pušaloto žydų ne vieną amžių gyvenusių taikiai su savo kaimynais,
atminimui. 1941 metais nacių žudikai bei jų talkininkai išžudė
paskutinius Pušaloto žydus. Tebūnie šventas jų atminimas.

Yiddish:

אין אנדענק פון פושאלאטער יידן וועלכע האבן יארהונדערטער געלעבט
בשלום מיט זייערע שכנים און פון די פושלאטער יידן וועלכע די
נאצי-מערדער און זייערע ארטיקע באהעלפער האבן דערמארדעט אין
1941. הייליק זאל זיין זייער אנדענק.

English:

In memory of Pushalot Jews who lived and worked for centuries,
in peace with their neighbors, and those who were uprooted and
murdered by the Nazi murderers and their accomplices in 1941.
May their memory be for a blessing.

About 248 Pušalotas Jews were murdered in Šadeikoniai forest in August or September 1941. The exact date of the murder is unknown [Jakulytė-Vasil, 2011, p. 142].

The plaque was erected in 2005 [Cohen-Mushlin et al., vol. 2, p. 63].
