Fol. 2v: The opening page of the morning service for the first day of the New Year is decorated by Scribe A

with a large initial word (14 lines) opening the yozer מלך (אזור גבורה) (melekh, King; Davidson 1924-33,מ  1529). It is written in large display letters in dark brown ink (stem height60 mm; 8 lines) decorated with small rosette roundels in the stems of the letters and surrounded by wrigglework in red ink. The initial word is surrounded by

a dragon and animals drawn in brown and red ink. Flanking the flag of the Lamed on the right is a winged dragon with pointed red ears and a leafy tail confronting a monkey seated on a stool holding an apple (cf. fol. 21).

Below the initial word are two confronting animals: on the right a lion with a red mane, partially coloured in yellow ochre; on the left a unicorn with a down-turned horn.
