A tinted, rectangular panel beneath the text space encloses the four sons standing in a row against a blue background. On the far right stands a bearded man wearing a hat and a long robe, representing the wise son. He extends his right hand towards a bearded soldier wearing a large floppy hat, representing the wicked son. The wicked son holds a sword in his left hand and carries a shield on his raised right arm. To his right a youth wearing a short tunic and boots stands leaning on a staff, representing the simple son. At his right stands a barefooted boy wearing a long robe and raising both hands, representing the son who does not know how to ask. He faces the simple son who stands on the far left. A small square panel at the top of the text on the right encloses the initial letter 'Bet' and a tinted illustration. The letter begins the passage, "Blessed be the All-Present ..." Behind the letter, which is executed in spared ground technique, a bearded man wearing a hat and a long robe sits on an armchair by a covered table. He raises his hands together in prayer. Beneath, another square panel encloses the initial letter 'Het,' and a tinted illustration of a man standing with the lamb for the Paschal sacrifice. The scene relates to the adjacent passage dealing with the laws of Passover which are to be taught to the wise son. A curved, ornamental pediment ending in scrolls, which rests on two columns, surrounds the text space. The entire frame is executed in spared ground technique.
