Sacred and Ritual Objects Torah case, Israel/Eretz Israel, 1942
The wooden torah^case consists of a body and a crown.
The cylindrical body is covered by purple velvet attached by nails. The body is framed by silver friezes. The upper frieze bears a dedicatory inscription,while the other ones are decorated with a floral pattern. Two Star^of^David shaped plaques are attached to one side of the body. They are decorated with an amphora of flowers and a Star of David. The inscription within the Star of David reads: ציון !Zion!
A Hebrew letter in every corner forms the word Star of David. An arched silver plaque bearing the a dedicatory is attached to the front. A lily-like crennelation, into which red beads are threaded encircles the upper borders. The case is fastened by a pair of silver clasps. The inner face of the case is covered with white cotton. The dome-shaped crown is composed of a main section and a crest. The main section is covered with purple velvet. The undulating crest is is decorated with a floral pattern. Chains hanging from rings, fixed around the centre of the crest carry drop-shaped bells. Two rimon mounts are fixed on the crown. ##The inner face of the crown is covered with a white paper covered by glass and bearing inscriptions. The dedicatory inscription on the upper border is repousse in outline letters. It reads:
הספר תורה הזה הק מרת רחל בת ר' שלמה בן % מו )מולא( ישראל פה ירושלים תו)תבנה ותכונן( היום ה סיון-תשב !
This Torah scroll has been dedicated (int.) by Madam Rahel daughter of Rabbi (int.) Salomon son of % Mullah Israel here Jerusalem, may it be built and established (int.), today the 5th of Sivan (5)602=(21.5.1942)!
The dedicatory inscription on the plaque is written in Persian Hebrew. The inscription on the inner face of the crown is written in black filled letters. It begins in an arched frame, reading:
וזאת התורה אשר שם משה לפני בני ישראל (Deut. 4:44)
It continues on the left: תורה צוה לנו משה מורשה קהלת יעקב (Deut. 33:4)
The inscription below the arch reads: כתר% תורה !Crown ## of Torah!
A Star^of^David between these words bears an inscription which reads: ציון !Zion!.
The following line is decorated with alternate red and green triangles. They are followed by a dedicatory inscription, which reads:
תיק זה וספר תורה שבו הקדישה אותו האשה## הכשרה והצדקת מרת רחל מב!ת בת שלומה## הכם ישראל להצלחתה % וגם לע!ן אמה ##מרת גאן גאן תנצ!בה )תהי נשמתה צרורה בצרור החיים( ובתנאי מפורש שהםפר ## תורה הזה אינו מוקדש בהחלט בשום מקום אלא !
This case and the Torah scroll inside were donated by ##the conscientious and righteous woman Madam Rahel, blessed shall she be above women in the tent (int.) (Judg. 5:24), daughter of Salomon ? Israel !For her success % and for the exaltation of the soul of (int.) her mother, Madam Gan Gan, may her soul be bound up in the bond of life (int.), and on the specific condition that this Torah scroll is not donated to any other place! The inscription continues on the left side:
הוא ברשות הגברת רחל הנז' וברשות בא' כוחה## האחרים כ' מר משה אברהם עזרה ניסו הי!ו )ה' יחיהו ויזכהו(ץ ומר ציון בן% שמעון ניםן הי!ו)ה' יחיהו ויזכהו( להעמידובכל מקום שירצוץ וזכות התורה תגן עליהם## ועל זרעם באלף המגן אכי!ר ירושלים סיון ש תש! !
Other that is under supervision of Madam Rahel ? and under supervision of? Mr. Moses Abraham Ezra Nissan, may the Lord sustain him and grant him favour (int.), and Mr. Zion son of% Samson Nissan, may the Lord sustain him and grant him favour (int.)
!To put it every place they wish ? Jerusalem, Sivan, the year (5)602=(1842)!
