History/Provenance

Kuranets (Kurenets) was occupied on June 25, 1941 [Al'tman 498]. When the occupation regime in the town had been firmly established, there was a flurry of anti-Jewish decrees. No ghetto was established in Kuranets (Kurenets) [Yad Vashem: Untold Stories].

On September 9 (or 8), 1942, the Jewish community of Kuranets (Kurenets) was liquidated at the northern edge of the town [Yad Vashem: Untold Stories]. In 1955, the first monument commemorating the victims was set up in this place [Botvinnik, 63]. In the 1990s, the monument under discussion was erected near the old one. In 2003, a memorial plaque was affixed to the fence of the monument [Yad Vashem: Untold Stories].
Today the stele is a place of commemorative ceremonies.

There is another Holocaust memorial in the town. It is erected near the former Jewish cemetery and dates back to the 1990s.
