  Torah finials, Zhytomyr

© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Radovan, Zev, 1992
The silver Torah finial consists of a shaft, a body, a head and an apex. The shaft is undulating and is supported by a stepped raised base. The central strip of the base is decorated with a floral motif and three pairs of birds flanking shields. The bottom part of the shaft is composed of eight facets decorated alternately with scrolls and buildings. The center of the shaft is encircled by a thick ring decorated with scrolls interspersed with griffins, a unicorn and a lion all couchant guardant. The body is a cylindrical like fence composed of open-work leaves. It is divided into two by an inner circlet. Bells hang from the body. Sea Horses surmount the body and support the head which is shaped like a crown decorated with alternating smooth and floral strips. The head is surmounted by an apex shaped like a spread winged bird standing in the center of a coronet.
