  Torah shield

© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Radovan, Zev, 1992

The rectangular silver Torah shield consists of a plate.

A medallion in the center framed by a foliate scroll bears a dedicatory inscription in sqaure filled letters which reads:

ז"נ [זאת נדבת] / יוסף / בהרר [בן הרב רבי] / יעקב ז"צ [זכר צדיק [לברכה]]

"This is the donation of Joseph son of Rabbi Jacob, of righteous memory."

It is flanked by two rampant griffins and surmounted by a crown. A flower is situated over the crown. At the base two storks face eachother. At the top a protruding lion passant surmounts the shield. The ground is a foliage setting and interplays with the animals. There is a foliate scroll frame and the edges of the shield follow the scroll design.
