Bekker, David (painter, artist; 1895-1956)
{"6284":"David Yona Bekker was born in Vilna (Vilinius), Lithuania, in 1895, in the family of the painter Avraham Menachem Mendel Bekker. He studied art in the Antokolsky School of Vilna. The family moved to Palestine in 1910-11. David Bekker continued his education at the Bezalel Art School in Jerusalem. During the First World War, Bekker moved to Bulgaria, where he did carvings in wood and metal. He subsequently went to Romania, where he designed coins, medals, and ivory carvings for King Carol I. He continued his studies in England, France, and the United States. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Denver, ultimately settling in Chicago. Among his works in the U.S. are ivory carvings that he made for President Warren G. Harding.
