Description:

The sculpture consists of a column shape with metal spikes piled together and then welded together. Barbed wire surrounds the column. This entire column is on a base and chain surrounding it to prevent students from getting hurt. The sculpture was initially silver however, over time, the metal has turned into rust and became a rusted color. On top of that, the barbed wire fell and is now on the floor by the base.

History/Provenance

This sculpture, titled “Holocaust” by Paul Noah Perces, was created in 1989 and placed on the Ramapo College of New Jersey campus in 1994. Before its placement, the artist and the college signed a one-year, renewable loan agreement on February 1, 1994. The piece remains in place today. The dedication ceremony for this statue took place on Thursday, April 7, 1994, at 1 PM, in the annual observance of Yom HaShoah.

Many people attended the ceremony, including Paul Noah Perces, Judith Peck, David Tundirs, Robert, Dr. Shalom Gorewitz, Dr. Joseph Rudavsky, and Hillel students. The Jewish students on campus co-sponsored the event and spoke to the students of the School of Contemporary Arts at Ramapo College. Along with students and faculty, members of the Jewish press were also present. Originally, the statue was placed in the library, but it was later moved to the Grove, the center of the campus, to gain greater recognition.
