History/Provenance

Babruisk (Bobruisk) was occupied on June 28, 1941 [Al'tman, 91]. In early August of the same year, a ghetto was established. From the first weeks, the German troops murdered large groups of Jews in unknown places. The majority of Babruisk (Bobruisk) Jewry was murdered in two big operations carried out in September and November 1941 [Yad Vashem: The Untold Stories].

The monument under discussion was erected on July 3, 2005, in honor of the 60th anniversary of Babruisk (Bobruisk) liberation [probelarus.by]. It is a part of "The Righteous Among the Nations Alley" Memorial Complex that is dedicated to 17 people of Babruisk (Bobruisk) and Babruisk (Bobruisk) region who saved the Jews during the war years [glusk.by]. The monument was designed by architects Galina Levina and Leonid Levin, winners of the State Prize of the Republic of Belarus [probelarus.by]. Today the monument is a place of commemorative ceremonies.

There are other monuments in the town and its vicinity related to the Holocaust events.
Approximately in the 1950s, a monument in the Jewish cemetery in Babruisk (Bobruisk) was erected.
In the 1960s, the first monument at the Kamenka killing site was established. In the 1970s it was replaced by a new one. In 1992 the additional monument was erected at the site.
In the 1960s, another monument was established in the Babruisk (Bobruisk) Jewish cemetery.
In 2008, a monument to the prisoners of the Babruisk (Bobruisk) Ghetto was erected at Bakhapova Street.
In 2021, "From Life to Life" monument was unveiled at 31 Chongarskaya Street.
