Who is Commemorated?

The Jews of Łódź, Poland, who perished in the Holocaust.

Description:

The monument is located in the Southeastern Alley of the cemetery, along with dozens of other Holocaust memorials built by Landsmannschaft organizations, survivors, and relatives.

The monument consists of a black rectangular obelisk and a stone block. The obelisk, topped with the name "Lodz," features a bronze plaque depicting an endless train, barbed wire, Magen David patches, two helpless open hands, and six candles symbolizing Holocaust victims. The obelisk resembles a crematoria chimney. The stone block has the ghetto model on its upper part and a predatory bird with swastika-like talons looms above.

The monument bears Hebrew and Yiddish inscriptions honoring the community's memory. One of the inscriptions indicates that the monument contains the ashes of the Jews, who perished in the Holocaust.
