Ceremonies del la Feste des Sorts, Paris, circa 1750

© Gross Family Collection, Photographer: Bar Hama, Ardon,

The following description was prepared by William Gross:

This etching is a very graphic depiction of the Purim celebration in the synagogue, especially emphasizing how noise was made at the mention of the name of Haman during the reading of the Megillah. There is no depiction of the Grager as we know it today, but rather the noise is made by pounding stones together or on the floor as depicted in the center of the image. The name of Haman was written on the floor and the blows of the rocks both created noise and eventually obliterated the name of the villain of the Esther story. There are also depictions of children holding wooden hammers to make noise by pounding. The etching is unsigned.
