Comparative & Miscellaneous Sukkah Tableau, Augsburg, circa 1730
The following description was prepared by William Gross:
Englebrecht was one of the most prolific engravers and publishers of baroque-style engravings during the first half of the 18th century. He published thousands of engravings for various purposes, including a large series of "peep show" type theater tableaus displaying both religious and secular subjects. Among the many toy theaters published were two on Jewish subjects, both copied from the engravings of Bernard Picart from the 1720s (for the example, see ID image 379059). One scene was the interior of the Amsterdam synagogue and the other was this celebration. The scene by Picart represents a festive meal by an affluent family during "Sukkot", the feast of Tabernacles during the autumn season when meals were eaten outside in a temporary, open-roofed structure. Because such objects were often used as toys for children, with the high attrition rate for such items, relatively few survived the more than 250 years since their creation.
