  Ushpizin Plaque, Montreal, circa 1950

© Gross Family Collection, Photographer: Bar Hama, Ardon,

The following description was prepared by William Gross:

The custom of Uzhpizin placards followed the Jews of Europe who immigrated to the New World.  This example was produced in Montreal and follows the pattern of its predecessors.  The illustrated scenes contain those of the holy places in Eretz Israel, as was common since the late 19th century. These scenes are very reminiscent of those often painted in synagogues during the first part of the 20th century in Eastern Europe. The designer also used the signs of the Zodiac, a tradition with strong roots both in Jewish use in general and in Galicia in particular.
