Elie Wiesel

Description

A bronze bust of Elie Wiesel set on a three level base, is set within the side courtyard of the Elie Wiesel Museum, established in the former Wiesel family house. The lowest two levels of the base are horizontal and stepped. A tall pedestal-type base rises from the top of the send level, and the bronze bust of the Nobel Laureate is placed on this. Around the pedestal base, inscribed on the top of the second level of the base, is a quotation from Wiesel’s memoir Night, presented in four languages.

The full quote, not included in the memorial, is “one person of integrity can make a difference, a difference of life and death. As long as one dissident is in prison, our freedom will not be true. As long as one child is hungry, our life will be filled with anguish and shame. What all these victims need above all is to know that they are not alone; that we are not forgetting them, that when their voices are stifled we shall lend them ours, and that while their freedom depends on ours, the quality of our freedom depends on theirs.”
