Ephemera Ushpizin plaque, Warsaw (Warszawa), 1839
The following description was prepared by William Gross:
This is one of three stone lithographs in the Gross family collection that are from an unidentified press in Warsaw. Such Jewish printed sheets from an early date in Warsaw are exceedingly rare. On this page, the combination of the Rabbinical portrait with the Sukka blessings is unusual, with the Ushpezin texts at the top. The costumes in all these pieces is Hassidic. In this example as well as one other the Leviathan, one of the primary Messianic symbols in Judaism, is used to frame part of the text.
Shlomo Zalman Lipszyc was born in Poznan in 1765. From the year 1819, he served as Rabbi in Warsaw. It was only from that date that the position of Rabbi for the whole city was created. His large and beautiful tomb still stands in the Jewish cemetery of Warsaw.
