פ"נ

ת'נ'צ'ב'ה'

Translation: Here are buried about 100 Jewish martyrs that were killed and murdered for the sanctification of the Name / by the wicked government of Hitler, may his name be obliterated, / in the years 1942-1945. May God remember their holy souls and avenge in front of our eyes the vengeance of the blood of His servants (after Deut. 32:43) which cry from the earth "Earth, do not cover their blood" (Job 16:18). "may their place of rest be in Gan Eden" (El male rachamim prayer). May their souls be bound in the bundle of life.

German:

Hier ruhen 100 unserer Brüder
welche in Sturme der Verfolgung
im April 1945
als Opfer ihres Glaubens
von freflerischen Mörderhänden
den grausamen Tod gefunden haben.
Mit Eurem heldenhaften Blute
wurde ein Kapitel der unvergesslichen
Jüdischen Leidensgeschichte geschrieben
welche wir nie vergessen werden

History/Provenance

The first concrete monument on the mass grave was constructed in September 1947 by the Jewish Displaced Persons from camp 231. It contained Hebrew and German inscriptions.

The monument was renovated in 1991. The front of the monument was covered with granite plaques, on which the original inscriptions were repeated. According to the website of the Mauthausen Komitee Steyr (https://mkoe-steyr.at/juedisches-steyr/): "During the renovation work on the Jewish cemetery in the summer of 1991, the text of the memorial stone at the mass grave, which commemorates the death march of the Hungarian Jews in April 1945, was engraved on new granite slabs. This made it possible to preserve the legibility of the text. The costs of 26,000 Austrian schillings were borne by the Linz Israelite Community. The Mauthausen Committee Steyr was responsible for the organizational implementation. The new memorial stone was unveiled at the commemoration ceremony on November 8, 1991."
