Ephemera Kol Sasson ve-Kol Simchah, Jerusalem, circa 1900
The following description was prepared by William Gross:
Wedding invitations by their very nature are extremely ephemeral and do not survive in large numbers. Early examples are therefore quite rare and are printed in varying degrees of aesthetic charm and decoration.
This invitation was for a wedding ceremony in the old city of Jerusalem with both bride and groom from the family Duarubi. Marriage between cousins was a frequent custom of Sephardic life at this time. The invitation states that the ceremony will be held at the home of the father of the bride in the neighborhood of Nisan Bak, one of the leaders of the Ashkenazi Jewish community in Jerusalem.. From the day and Hebrew month - 10 Elul - the date of this invitation is either 1897 or 1909. Gold printing was often used by Jerusalem printers of this time.
Groom: Yosef ben Chavah Dvarobi
