Sacred and Ritual Shmirah le-Yeled ule-Yoledet, Haifa, circa 1960
The following description was prepared by William Gross:
This page is in the standard form of birth amulet as printed in Jerusalem, although it is published and perhaps printed in Haifa, the only such amulet from this city in the Gross Family Collection. The imagery presents both a protective angel and a hand, represented by the traditional form of the "wisdom of the hand" and the central element of the hamsa in the form of a Kabbalistic hand, providing protective values to the printed sheet. This version of the amulet contains the Shir LeMa'alot, a "Lachash" against the evil eye by the Chida, and the story of Eliyahu meeting Lilit.
This example of this immensely popular amulet was printed on cardboard with a portrait of Maimonides on the other side. At the top is a hanging ring for a wall display on either side.
