Memorial to Kalisz Victims of the Holocaust in the Southern Tel Aviv (Holon) Cemetery, Israel, 1982

© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Levin, Vladimir, December 2023

Memorial Name:

No official name.

Who is Commemorated?

The Jews of Kalisz, Poland, who perished in the Holocaust.

Description:
The monument is located in the Western Alley of the cemetery, along with dozens of other Holocaust memorials built by Landsmannschaft organizations, survivors, and relatives.

The monument is designed to resemble a crematorium, featuring a red brick chimney and a structure resembling an oven opening with metal doors on its side. There are two metal plaques inside the "oven", with a Hebrew inscription that indicates that the monument contains the ashes of the community's victims, who perished in the Holocaust. At the front, there is a metal relief depicting a group of Jews being deported by Nazi soldiers. The relief is signed by the artist Jacob Green and dated 1982. The monument bears Hebrew and Yiddish inscriptions honoring the community's memory. The community name is emphasized through the use of a larger font size.
