Sacred and Ritual Objects Hanging oil lamp, 19th c.
The silver hanging^lamp consists of a body and a hanger.
The main section of the body is globular and flattened and is mounted over a concave bottom. An acorn like apex is attached at its end. A ring is attached to the bottom of the apex.
A cylindrical neck with an expanding rim is mounted over the main section. The main section is decorated with a row of grooves. The bottom is decorated with a row of vertical grooves and it bears a dedicatory inscription. The centre of the neck is encircled by a ring. The neck rim is decorated with a groove pattern. An openwork foliate parapet composed of three units is mounted over the body shoulder. The lamp is hanging by three chains from a ring. The chains are inserted through voluted foliate handles. The chains are composed of geometrical links. The dedicatory inscription which appears on the body bottom is engraved in full letters and reads:
נדבת ק"ק [קהילת קודש] ליוורנו לע"נ [לעילוי נשמה] של הרב ד"ר שבתאי א'[אלפרדו] טואף תשכ"ה
"Donation of the Holy Community(int.) of Livorno for the exaltation of the soul(int.) of the Rabbi Dr. Shabbetai A(lfredo) Toaff-(5)725=(1965)"
