Hebrew Illuminated Manuscripts
New Year food blessings, circa 1925

© Gross Family Collection, Photographer: Unknown, -

The following description was prepared by William Gross:

In many different communities, different types of foods and special prayers for each of them are used in a ritual custom on the eve of Rosh Hashanah. Iran was one of those places. This is a single hand-written and decorated sheet recording the names of the foods and the prayers said over each of them. There are other such single pages from Iran in stone lithograph and machine printing techniques. The Hebrew texts in Iranian-Hebrew script are enclosed in a painted, decorative frame.
