History/Provenance

In 1567, the Jews in Lipník n.B. bought land for a cemetery as the existing one was too small.

Burials took place here until 1883. The cemetery at that time had from 1,500 to 1,800 tombstones.

In 1942, the cemetery was destroyed by the German army. After the war, about 160 whole and 20 fragmentary tombstones were transported to the new cemetery and placed there at the western corner of the south wall. The area of the cemetery was then transformed into a park with a playground.

After 1989, with the support of Agudath Israel Of America and the descendants of Rabbi Fränkel from Great Britain, the cemetery saw a complete restoration. A sandstone replica of Rabbi Fränkel's tombstone was installed.
