© Vladimir Levin, Photographer: Levin, Vladimir, 2014

Memorial name

Mass killing pit.

Who is Commemorated?

People killed here by the Nazis. According to the data of G.Ch.K. (State Commission), up to 25,000 victims could have been killed in this pit.

Description:

The pit, the largest in Paneriai, is located in the southern part of the memorial complex. It was 35 meters in diameter and more than 5 meters deep.

The memorial is a granite circle surrounding the pit. A commemorative granite block is situated at the upper edge of the pit. It bears identical Lithuanian and Russian inscriptions.

Inscription:

In Lithuanian:

Čia
hitleriniai okupantai
degino iš žudynių vietų
iškastus lavonus

In Russian:

Здесь
гитлеровские
оккупанты сжигали
выкопанные трупы

Translation: Here Hitler’s occupiers burned unearthed corpses [from the killing sites].

According to an information plate, the inscription is not quite accurate, since exhumed bodies were burned at special sites next to each pit.
