Holocaust memorial plaque in the Taharat Hakodesh Choral Synagogue in Vilnius, Lithuania, after 1953

© “Synagogues in Lithuania: A Catalogue” Archives, Photographer: Mickūnaitė, Giedrė, 2010

Who is Commemorated?

Jewish communities of Lithuania annihilated in the Holocaust.

Description:

The plaque is located at the southern part of the eastern wall of the prayer hall of the synagogue.

The plaque, which is in a gilded frame, bears the dates on which 121 Lithuanian Jewish communities perished and was intended to allow relatives of the victims to say Kaddish on their yortsayts, the anniversaries of their deaths.

The upper blue band bears the words “For eternal memory”. Beneath the band, the dates pertaining to the fate of the Vilnius community and the dates pertaining to the Kaunas community are written separately. The list of 121 communities with the dates of their annihilation are written in three framed columns. The names of communities are grouped by date. Several names appear twice. Three communities were added after the plaque was completed.

The left-most column, framed and topped by a Star of David, contains the Yizkor prayer and a dedication to the memory of Rabbi Haim Tzvi Shifrin, the chief rabbi of Vilnius after WWII. This inscription gives us the earliest date of the creation of the plaque, as it states that he passed away in 1953 (though he actually passed away in 1952). However, the frame was probably made in the 1910s or 20’s. The lower margin of the plaque contains the names of donors.

Inscription:

לזכרון עולם
לקדושים מערי ליטא
שנהרגו מידי הפשיסטים הארורים בשנות 1941–1943

History/Provenance

The plaque was made after 1953, since that year is indicated as the year of the passing away of Rabbi Haim Tzvi Shifrin, the chief rabbi of Vilnius after WWII, to who's memory one of the donations mentioned on the plaque was dedicated. It should be noted that Rabbi Shifrin actually died in 1952.

The plaque was almost certainly created for the Taharat HaKodesh Synagogue - the only active synagogue in Vilnius after WWII. There are three other plaques with religious texts in the synagogue, brought from other houses of prayer (see https://cja.huji.ac.il/browser.php?id=14873&mode=set) These plaques were made in the 1910s and 1920s, and it is plausible that the gilded frame of a similar plaque was used for this memorial.
