Comparative Material & Miscellaneous Plate, Paris, ca. 1820
The following description was prepared by William Gross:
The subject of exotic clothes or costumes was a very popular one in Western Europe during the 19th century. Many books were published with elaborate engravings and lithographs of such costumes from all parts of the world. These images found their way into other objects as well, of which these two plates are fine examples. Part of a set of 12 plates, these two carry the only Jewish costumes from the series. This plate copies the earlier printed image of Jews from the Ottoman Empire and is titled "Juif turquie." this series was created around 1830 by a royal manufactory in the area of Paris. The name of the firm was Dagoty-Honore. In 1822 the two partners seperated and the firm was dissolved.
