Hebrew Illuminated Manuscripts
  MOIJA Esther Scroll with a Herald, Italy, 17th/18th centuries (?)

The scroll opens with a depiction of a man wearing a turban blowing a trumpet standing in front of a gate. The Hebrew text of the Book of Esther is written within square panels separated by columns. The upper margins are decorated with floral motifs, acanthus leaves, and birds. The lower margins are filled with a composition of an angel head flanked by acanthus leaves and floral motifs alternately with checkered pattern. 

The scroll is mounted on a partly preserved wooden roller.

The Book of Esther in Hebrew

Codicology

The scroll is formed of 7 membranes, containing in total 20 columns of 21 (?) lines each.

The text is written in Hebrew square Italian script with tagim in black ink on the flesh side of the parchment membranes.

The letter ח (Es. 1:6) is enlarged and bolded.

The ruling is made with a stylus along with the membranes.

The membranes in the scroll are stitched together.
