Sacred and Ritual Objects Tallit Katan, Denmark, 1914
The following description was prepared by William Gross:
The tallit katan ("small tallit") is a fringed garment traditionally worn either under or over one’s clothing by Jewish males. It is a poncho-like garment with a hole for the head and special twined and knotted fringes known as tzitzit attached to its four corners. The requirements regarding the fabric and fringes of a tallit katan are the same as that of a full tallit. Generally a tallit katan is made of wool or cotton.
A very special Tallit Katan, finely designed and embroidered in silk thread. It is in almost perfect shape, so it was clearly not intended to be used daily. Most likely it was made for the celebration of a Bar Mitzvah, to be worn on that one day to grace the very special occasion. There is another such specially embroidered Tallit Katan from Turkey in the Gross Family Collection, 047.015.012. Inscription: Top: L O Bottom: 1914
