Token for entrance to the botanical gardens of Jewish student Abraham Gomes de Sylva, Amsterdam, 1722

© Gross Family Collection, Photographer: Bar Hama, Ardon, -

The following description was prepared by William Gross:

Even the most mundane of objects were sometimes given to graphic presentation and decoration. Students studying medicine in Amsterdam were expected to intimately know botanical formulas for the treatment of various ailments. This required frequent studies of plants. Students at the Medical School were thus issued an entrance token to the botanical gardens. This medal for free entrance was issued to a Jewish student, Abraham Gomes de Sylva.   Inscription: Horti Med Amstel Liber Ingressus.
