Hebrew Illuminated Manuscripts
LBI Rocaille Esther Scroll, Fürth (?), mid-18th century

© Courtesy of the Leo Baeck Institute, New York, Photographer: N/A, -

The scroll is elaborately decorated with hand-painted ornamentation whose layout in general repeats on all membranes. In the upper margins, above the text panels, there are oval frames flanked by stylized acanthus leaves with cityscapes. They are separated by flower-filled vases (they are partly placed between the text panels). The text opens with an enlarged initial in a decorative frame. The rectangular text panels are interspersed either by figures of Esther story protagonists standing in the niches or an ornament with flowers. The lower margins are precisely filled with the narrative scenes from the Book of Esther and midrashim in rectangular frames decorated with Rocaille (shells) on their sides. The latter features the style of the anonymous maker of the manuscript and can be found in his other scrolls too. Between them, flowers (some of them can be carnations) are placed.
