Sacred and Ritual Objects Seal of Chevrat Ozer Dalim Lomdei Shas u-Mishnayot in the Beit Midrash of Rebbe from Komarno in Safed, Safed, circa 1900
The following description was prepared by William Gross:
A seal is a device for making an impression in wax, clay, paper, or some other medium, including an embossment on paper, and is also the impression thus made. The original purpose was to authenticate a document, a wrapper for one such as a modern envelope, or the cover of a container or package holding valuables or other objects. They have been used for two thousand years, also by Jews.
Almost all religious institutions in Eretz Israel had special seals with imagery of the place in which they were located. Many such seals are seen from Jerusalem with the image of the Kotel. This special seal is from the Jewish community of Safed for a holy society to support the reading of the Talmud, the Mishnayot and the Zohar (Chevrat Ozer Dalim Lomdei Shas u-Mishnayot ve-Zohar). The image is of the tomb of Shimon bar Yochai.
