Sacred and Ritual Objects
  Torah shield, Poland, 1650

© Gross Family Collection, Photographer: Bar Hama, Ardon, -

The following description was prepared by William Gross:

Almost no ritual objects from silver from before 1750 are known to have survived from Galicia.  The many waves of destruction, beginning with the Chimelnitzki uprising and continuing with the invasions of Poland to about 1750, left few material objects remaining.  Dated1650, this may be one of the very earliest known Galician Tasim.  The elaborate inscription makes use of many biblical references and appears to deal with the fulfillment of a vow by the donor.  The unicorn, which appears on this object, was popular imagery for Galician Jews, probably having a messianic meaning.

Inscription:  The Crown of the Law.  Long inscription having to do with the redemption of a vow.
