Snuffbox used at Sabbath and festival synagogue prayers, Jerusalem, circa 1925

© Gross Family Collection, Photographer: Bar Hama, Ardon, -

The following description was prepared by William Gross:

Such snuff boxes were used at Sabbath and festival synagogue prayers.  During long hours of prayer, snuff boxes were passed around to the participants as a stimulant to maintain alertness and concentration. This example is a product of the Bezalel school in the 1920's. The top carries a stamped depiction of the Dome of the Rock which represented the Temple Mount for Jews.
