Jewish printed books Machzor.....Minhag Mehrin..., Sulzbach, 1735
This text was prepared by William Gross:
This book is a Machzor with Yiddish commentary. There is a beautiful title page with biblical figures while inside are woodcuts of months and zodiac signs.
One of a series of Machzorim printed in Sulzbach by Meshulam Zalman Frankl (for a later edition, see B.1713). It carries a beautifully illustrated title page depicting many of the great biblical heroes. This frontispiece was later copied and used in Fürth as well. The text contains instructions and commentary in Yiddish, and is printed in the same type as other Yiddish works. This, in contrast to another edition in the series, printed in 1758 with more extensive commentary in Hebrew, and likely intended for a more educated audience.
Both Machzorim contain identical woodcuts representing the months of the year and the signs of the zodiac.
Meshulam Zalman operated a press in Sulzbach from 1722-1764 (the press had been established by his father, Aharon Fraenkel). In 1764, he turned the shop over to his sons, Aaron and Naphtali, so that he could devote more time to preparing the press for a second Talmud edition (his first, known as Sulzbach Red, was issued 1756-1763). In return, his sons agreed to pay him a weekly pension of ten florin for the rest of his life. He died in 1781.
