Sacred and Ritual Objects Wedding cup, Hanau, circa 1900
The following description was prepared by William Gross:
This double wedding cup is patterned after the double-barrel cups so popular in Germany during the 17th and 18th centuries While secular in origin, this type was used in Jewish wedding ceremonies for the sipping of wine by both the bride and groom. This particular cup is a good example of the "Historismus" style that was prevalent in Jewish ritual objects from the last quarter of the 19th and the first decades of the 20th century, particularly in Germany, although many objects were exported to other countries. The firm of Neresheimer, which manufactured this cup, was founded in Hanau in 1880. The company was one of a number than made objects in styles of earlier centuries. Most of the work was cast, but of such a quality that it is often mistaken for hand repousse.
