Jewish printed books Chamishah Ta'aniot, Amsterdam, 1728
This text was prepared by William Gross:
Some of the greatest tragedies and disasters to befall the Jewish people are memorialized in prayers and fast days. This is an edition of the prayers for the five main fast days in Jewish tradition, the main one of which commemorates the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. The frontispiece of this book contains both an imaginary illustration of the temple and a picture of its destruction. This upper illustration is labeled "in memory of the destruction" and is modelled after an earlier illustration in an Amsterdam publication with the same prayers from 1689. The lower picture is a copy of an earlier image accompanying a mid-17th century book about the temple by Yehudah Templo.
This volume was published by Avraham Athias, a third generation member of a famous Hebrew publishing family that published its first book some 70 years earlier in Amsterdam.
